My Morning Routine

My Morning Routine

Finding true happiness takes trial and error. Even then, the definition of happiness is quite subjective. After all, what is true happiness? Does it exist? And are there levels to this highly sought after feeling?

Overall, I would consider myself a happy individual. This is not to say that I don’t experience moments of what is perceived as a negative emotion (sadness, anger, jealousy). I am human after all, not a robot. I am constantly tweaking and altering aspects of my life to find what works for me, and when I find it, I make use of it until something else works better. For me, mornings play a pivotal role in ensuring a good mood. Today I am going to share what my morning ritual looks like! 🙂

  • Pick Out Outfit the Night Before

To ensure that I am not scrambling in the morning to pick out an outfit, I like to plan what I wear the night before. This way, I save time before work, and I get to look decent.

  • Good Sleep

Getting a good night’s rest is a ritual that I struggle with. I will say that I am slowly improving, and getting a minimum of 6 hours of sleep. I have noticed that when I get 7.5 – 8 hours, I am feeling extra happy!

  • Setting an Alarm

I like to set my first alarm at least 15 minutes before I really have to get up in the morning. The follow up alarms go off every 5 minutes leading up to the 15 minute mark. This ensures that I don’t accidentally sleep in (I like to snooze my phone =P).

  • Check my Phone

When I wake up I give myself an extra 5 to 10 minutes to look through my phone. This helps get my brain going and activated. I briefly look through my emails, social media, and the news.

  • Take a Shower

I know many people prefer to shower the night before, but I am not one of these individuals. I have to shower in the morning to really wake up and feel fresh (I am a night sweater, TMI). Of course, the days that I work out after work (I can not work out in the mornings) I shower and wash my hair. So in the morning I simply just do a quick body rinse, without washing my hair.

  • Get Coffee Started

Right after I get out of the shower, dry off, and put on my robe, I head to the Keurig to get it started… so my coffee prepares while I take care of the item below.

  • Turn on Friends

I have lost count of how many times I have seen each and every episode of Friends, but nevertheless it is something I turn on every morning. It has become a crucial habit of mine! I don’t even watch it, I just like to have it on in the background and listen to what they are saying. It has come to the point where I can picture the scene on the show just by hearing the dialogue. ha!

  • Breakfast

At this point my coffee is ready, my Friends is on, and I am making a quick breakfast. What I eat depends on what I am craving in the moment. I have recently cut back on eating products with gluten, since my skin has been breaking out, YIKES! So, my current favorite breakfast includes a Rice Cake with Almond Butter, and Bananas or Jam.

  • Moisturize and Sunblock

My next step is to prep my skin before applying makeup. I use a toner, followed by a moisturizer, and eye cream. Then I apply sunblock, and voila, all done in this department.

  • Makeup and Hair

After my skin is prepped and ready, I sip on my coffee and eat my breakfast as I do my makeup. I have a simple makeup routine that I stick to religiously, which takes me about 12 minutes. Since I am eating as I do this, it takes a little longer, I would say about 20 minutes. When it comes to hair, I keep it fast and easy, unless I am feeling extra excited, which means I will flat-iron or curl my hair. On most days, I just brush it and leave it ‘au naturel’ and pin the top most layers of my hair back. Otherwise, I just pull it up in a bun, or horse tail.

  • Bathroom (I wish this was my bathroom)

I wish this routine would make it to the top of my list, but unfortunately I have to have breakfast and coffee before this magical moment takes place! Nevertheless it literally has to happen before I leave my house, or else I feel uncomfortable and my day does not run as smoothly. I hate to put so much emphasis on this matter, but it is what it is!

  • Read and/or Listen to Music on the Bus

So by this step I am all ready to get on the bus and head to work! On the bus I make it a priority to either read my book (Currently – The Power of Now), listen to music, or both. This ensures my mind stays activated, and I am ready to conquer the day!

Some may find my routine lengthy, but this is what works for me! After experimenting, I have found that this order puts me in a good mood, and helps me get going in the morning. I am not really a morning person, so whatever I can do in the morning that makes me happy is what I like to stick with. Over time, I will switch up my routine again to prevent boredom, and keep things exciting. Hope this helps you think about your own routine! Have a beautiful day! <3
